What better way to kick off the “Don’t’ Cry for Me Argentina” Edition of The Rewind than a little ditty from the classic football movie “Wildcats”: U-g-l-y… You ain’t got no alibi. You ugly! What?! What?! Your momma said you ugly!
Let’s take a closer look at the Patriots 31-14 rout of the Jets on Sunday.
THE GOOD
Darrelle Revis is ridiculous. The Jets’ Pro Bowl cornerback made one gaffe in an otherwise stellar personal performance against Randy Moss. Revis held the all-world wide receiver to 5 catches for 34 yards. What’s equally as impressive is that Moss was targeted 10 times in the head-to-head matchup and managed only five grabs. (Drew Coleman was covering Moss on one target). That’s a 50 percent success rate, an incredibly low number for Moss & Tom Brady.
The Patriots went after Revis early, but the kid wouldn’t crack. They figured they could catch Revis asleep on a first quarter flea-flicker. But Revis was step for step with Moss on the go route. In two games, Revis has held Moss to 9 catches for 58 yards. Not too shabby.
Nice job by DE Marques Douglas to jar the ball loose from RB Laurence Maroney in the first quarter. Good awareness by LB Bryan Thomas to recover the fumble.
Credit special teams coach Mike Westhoff from crowding the line of scrimmage and confusing the Patriots’ on Eric Smith’s blocked punt just before halftime. Smith split Jerod Mayo, who blocked a man to his left, and Pierre Woods to get a clean block of Chris Hanson’s punt.
Excellent job by FB Tony Richardson, RT Damien Woody and RB Thomas Jones to pick up the Patriots’ all-out blitz on Mark Sanchez’s 29-yard TD strike to Jerricho Cotchery on the Jets first drive of the second half. The Jets drew to within 24-14. But Sanchez apparently couldn’t stand prosperity (more on that later).
